Message from the Kurdistan Diaspora Women’s Federation on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

Message of the Kurdistan Diaspora Women’s Federation on the Anniversary of Combating Violence Against Women

On November 25, 16 days are devoted to combating violence against women.

On December 17, 1999, the United Nations General Assembly declared this date as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and issued a declaration outlining the responsibilities of states and the international community. The resolution emphasizes that the principles of equality, security, freedom, human dignity, and universal rights must be guaranteed to all without discrimination.

The UN Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women states:“Violence against women is the embodiment of historically unequal relations between men and women, and violence against women is one of the main methods by which women are forcibly placed at a lower level than men.”

A UN report highlights that one in three women globally experiences violence, and the number of women killed as a result of violence exceeds deaths from cancer, malaria, and natural causes. This serves as a dire warning about the scale of violence and violations against women.

Violence against women has a long history, with its occurrence and extent varying across societies and time. This violence is often a means of oppressing women, whether within society or individual relationships, rooted in a sense of ownership, dominance, or hatred towards women by the perpetrator.

Despite efforts, women in many countries continue to face violence due to factors such as gender inequality, cultural traditions, ethnic and political divisions, and socio-economic pressures. However, there is hope as women worldwide, including in Kurdistan, unite in their struggle to achieve justice, peace, and a world free from violence.

The Kurdistan Diaspora Women’s Federation condemns all forms of violence and calls for respect for human values, equality, justice, women’s rights, and dignity. We envision a peaceful world free from physical and mental violence and urge collective action against all forms of discrimination and violence.

Finally, the Kurdistan Diaspora Women’s Federation, along with women around the world, declares with one voice:“No to violence, Yes to respecting women’s dignity.”
