Annual Bochum Municipality Commemoration in Germany

On March 7, 2025, coinciding with International Women’s Day, and under the theme “Rights, Equality, and Empowerment for Women”, the Bochum Municipality’s Equality Office, in cooperation with the Mayor of Bochum, organized a special annual celebration that has been held for the past 17 years.

The event was attended by the Federation of Kurdish Diaspora Women in Germany, led by Ms. Khunav Hajo, along with a number of women from Bochum. The ceremony began with a special speech honoring women's achievements and contributions. It was announced that the names of activist and freedom-fighting women would be displayed on Bochum’s streets—a symbolic tribute to their struggle over the past century. These names were carefully selected from prominent women in North Rhine-Westphalia.

During the event, emphasis was placed on democracy as the foundation of life. The municipality also highlighted the harsh conditions faced by the Syrian people and the crises leading to forced migration.

Additionally, it was stressed that peace cannot be achieved through armed conflict but rather through a genuine desire for a stable and just life.

The event also reflected on 30 years of achievements by the Mayor, acknowledging their significant role in supporting women’s organizations and their continued efforts against gender-based violence in Germany.

Furthermore, a former President of the Düsseldorf Parliament and a former Minister of the Berlin Parliament delivered speeches, emphasizing that women's rights in Germany were not easily granted, but rather the result of a long and difficult struggle, filled with sacrifices. They also underlined the importance of achieving true equality.

The celebration featured a musical performance by a group of women, as well as an evening gathering. Discussions focused on solidarity and support for women’s issues, stressing that equality is the key to resolving these challenges.
