79th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Kurdistan Republic

The Kurdistan Diaspora Women’s Federation congratulates all Kurdish people, especially those in East Kurdistan, on the 79th anniversary of the establishment of the Kurdistan Republic.

The Kurdistan Republic was declared an independent Kurdish state on December 22, 1946, by the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDP), with Peshawar Qazi Mohammad serving as its president.

The establishment of an independent Kurdish state and the Kurdistan Republic has always been a dream and aspiration for the Kurdish people.

In its manifesto, the Republic outlined its goals for the Kurdish people:

  • Kurdish would serve as the language of media, education, and institutions, safeguarding national principles.

  • A provincial council for Kurdistan would be elected to oversee governance and address social issues.

  • All officials would be elected from among the people of the region.

  • Unity and mutual acceptance would foster brotherhood with the people of Azerbaijan.

  • Equality would be upheld through laws treating workers and senior citizens fairly.

Women played a vital role in the Kurdistan Republic, standing alongside men in political struggles. The eradication of illiteracy was a key governmental decision that led to the revival of the Kurdish language and literature. The Republic encouraged societal advancement based on Kurdish nationalism, emphasizing land, language, and statehood.

Under the leadership of President Qazi Mohammad, the Republic established a printing press, and the Kurdistan newspaper became the voice of the Republic of Mahabad.

Notably, the Kurdistan Republic was proclaimed in the presence of representatives from all parts of Kurdistan. The first cabinet consisted of a prime minister and 14 ministers overseeing various ministries.

The Republic was supported initially by the Soviet army but relied on its own military forces. The republican army was formed with contributions from the Barzani forces, led by Mullah Mustafa Barzani, and Mohammed Hussein Saify Qazi serving as the minister of war. The army possessed all the characteristics of a modern national military, protecting the borders of the Kurdistan Republic.

Following the Republic of Ararat in North Kurdistan, the Republic of Mahabad was established in the 20th century during a challenging period. Despite the difficulties, the Kurdistan Republic maintained a solid system of governance, ensuring peace and security in the region. Remarkably, no crimes were recorded during its brief existence, demonstrating that Kurds could serve as a model of peace and civilization in the region and beyond.
